  • Jerich Reports from PAX: Full Skill Tree Coverage!

In the first of several updates we have coming out of PAX, Jerich has brought us a full set of screenshots (taken by his iPhone) of every skill currently in Torchlight 2, including information on the skill tiers! Honestly, they are amazing - SO much better than the versions of the skills we saw during the beta. Here are a few thoughts after glancing through them:

    • The Outlander and Engineer classes are definitely the summon classes, although they have so many other potential builds you can't label them as just summoners.
    • A lot of skills gain simple tier upgrades, like increased range or effect duration, but some have multiple changes as you level up the skills.
    • The skill trees feel much more thematic than Torchlight 1, with each tree in the skill screen being rooted around a basic concept.
    • Some of the passive skills sound like by the time you finish levelling them up you would be massively powerful.
    • Some skills seem less impressive at first glance than if you look at a tree as a whole. For example, Prismatic Bolts (my favorite skill in the beta) only gains damage increases as you level up, but combined with passives and assistance skills it has the potential to do extremely elemental damage and DoT effect damage.

Notice: These skills may be subject to change for balance reasons by release!

The images are quite large, at roughly 2.5 MB per picture The images have all been re-sized for your convenience, and I have no doubt that Omnifas and our other wiki contributors (you can be one too!) will have it transcribed into our wiki ASAP. I'll put an update here when the skill pages are ready. Additionally, we'll have an extended analysis of Build Possibilities coming out from Doom once he can update his article with the latest information.

Once again, a huge thanks should go out to Jerich, who went to PAX and only had time to get us these pictures and answer the community's questions that were submitted... and then promptly stayed up all night transcribing the interviews with the devs. We'll be rolling out more from him in the next few days, but for now, enjoy the Skill previews!

Once again, click here for the photo album!

Someone should make a program so we can start planning our skills.

      I'm working on it Nico
Can't give any estimates yet, but it shouldn't take too long.

Although, now that I think of it, if I do put up a skill calculator before release it will be only with basic data. I'm not aware how mana costs and damage/effect percentages scale with each skill point. Plus, these skills are not in their finalized state and are most likely to undergo some changes.
I've got the basic functionalities already working (e.g. skill leveling) but we don't know how damage/costs scale on them, so I might just hold it off until after the game releases. Still thinking on this...

Thanks a lot Jerich, and of course Webbstre.
I guess I'll take a look at the skills several times until release. Can't wait to use them
@frostyNinja : Just make it public as a beta version. So we can already test it a little bit, and rush it when the full version will release

I saw that the "gun bot" is NOT improving with player level. that is so bad. so it means that the damage is caped by the rank. that was the biggest bug in torchlight 1 for me. if you played a summoner your summoned creatures are completly useless after charakter level 40. the same is going on here. and i dont see a "summon mastery". i can not believe.

Except that the skills in Torchlight 2 aren't limited by Base Level + 15, the strongest levels of it don't unlock until much, much later on. Besides, did you see the max tier bonus? It goes from shooting a single spray of shots (which pierce after 10 skill points are put into it) to THREE. That's a +200% damage increase right there.

Hello and thanks again for all your stuff

So, I have a question about passive skills : are they immediately available without level requirements ? Do we need to have at least 1 point spent in same panel to unlock them ?
    1. Webbstre's Avatar

The passive skills are all locked by level. The stronger ones become unlocked later - unless that changed and I missed it.

      Thank you for your answer.

So, if I understand : passives skills are all locked at start. For each pane : passive 1 and passive 2 are soon available and passive 3 is available later.

      So it's something like unlock level at 5, 10 and 20 ?

Sounds about right... maybe 5, 10 and 15. We'll have to see.
