In Russia, Torchlight II Plays You

This is the comments thread for a news post. You can view it in its original form by clicking here!

    *********

A great big hello today to all of our Eastern European/Northern Asia fans out there! Today's post is an official update on the status of the Region-locked Russia-only version of Torchlight II for Steam. For those of you who weren't aware, there are technically two versions of Torchlight II available on Steam for Pre-Order: One for people in Russia, and one for people who are NOT in Russia. While this won't effect the majority of you, it MIGHT be worth paying attention to if you are one of those people who trade games on Steam and planned on getting your copy of TL2 in that manner. Here's what you need to know:

BrianW: Hi, folks. I just wanted to offer up a quick clarification for you about this:

Valve created the region-locked Russian Steam store and we are publishing there under the terms of our agreement with a publisher in Russia. If you've somehow ended up with a region-locked Torchlight II pre-order and you are located outside of Russia, I'd recommend that you contact Valve for assistance. As always, please make sure you know exactly what you're getting before you complete a trade.

This means that if you are trying to use a copy of the Russian-locked TL2 outside of Russia, it won't work, and if you are trying to use a non-Russian copy inside Russia, it also won't work. Otherwise, there is no content difference between the two copies, as verified in this older post:

JediFreeman: The reason for there being a separate Russian Steam version is a publishing based one, not a content difference.

Same game, same content, nothing added or removed for either version.

There you have it! Be careful when trading games on Steam, as some of them are region locked due to publishing reasons, such as Torchlight II.

Pretty much just as I suspected. This is why i'm guessing next time Runic comes out with a game, it won't be digital. There are just too many publishers not willing to work with people as far as accepting the reality of the internet and trying to find a way to have both digital AND physical copies coexist. There need to be more 'print on demand' type systems for games.

Runic would definitely stay digital. But would they stop releasing in Russia? Possibly.

I think if you are in an area that uses the Russian shop you're actually ok. You'll have to contact Steam/Valve to confirm though.
